Equally, the Labour party leadership selection process is so long and complex that they would struggle to find someone in time.

Even though Tony handed power to Gordo, the last selection process engaged a full member ballot in all three parts of the electoral college: elected members; trade union Labour Party members; and ordinary party members.

The labour leader selection process is very scripted and nominees for the leadership have to participate in a series of hustings culminating in a conference.

As such it would take some really slick implementation of the Labour Party Constitution (Which is difficult to change) to change horses quickly.

Cast your mind back to the death in service of John Smith…Even under such extraneous circumstances the Electoral College rules were still applied. Also consider the fact that Tony fought an election, when we all suspected he would stand down.

Talk of a leadership change are thus probably hot air, as with a fixed and non-moveable date for an election, it is pretty much decided that very little will unseat Gordo…

In fact, talks of his replacement are probaly good for the Labour Party.

They shift focus from issues and policy shortfalls
They raise the profile of the current cabinet
They create sympathy for Gordo with the electorate

Th risk for any individual challenger to Gordo is also a huge factor. This late in the game any MP challenging Brown will look dis-loyal on the run up to a General Election? Is there anyone in the shadow Cabinet who would risk there seat to make a challenge?

As to Lord Mandleson, remember that he is still not all that popular with the Unions for helping John Smith remove “One Member One vote”, nor die hard party hard liners. They are still a powerful force for the left of party…Mandy is very much the right of party.

I wouldn’t rule out a meltdown change…but it would mean just that a meltdown.

Harriet Harmon, Eddy M or Alan Milburn are more likely to “bank” the leadership and opt for leading in opposition for 4 years and then looking to get the PM job on he bounce…I.E. The conservatives fail to make a considerable change to the mess they inherit…

Anything is possible ;0)

I bet, given his showing this week, Mandelson would go for it. He would say that he would seek to enter the House of Commons at the next election.

The big question is why Labour don’t ditch him.
