In my previous blog of the greatest orators of all time, upbeatskeptic, a valued contributor to this blogsite, raised, for some fun, the name of Daniel Hannan.

This is very interesting and I wanted to post a separate blog on Daniel and his oratory skills and some words of advice.

Now there can be no doubt that Daniel is a deeply intelligent man.  He reminds me of a Keith Joseph like figure.  A man who gets to detail quickly and can provide a clear course of action.  As you can tell I value Dan very highly and his attack on Gordon Brown was withering and devastating.  I think we would all agree that he choose his words brilliantly.  By far one of the highlight speeches of the year.

As a reminder:

If I had a pint with Daniel tonight, I would make several recommendations to him how to improve still further….as he has the potential to be an awesome orator.  These are not criticisms but improvements…..

- Show more warmth. People buy from People they like.  He rarely smiles. He is a very serious man and rarely do I feel we get under his skin. Creating real emotion in an audience requires a degree of warmth and the feeling of being at one with the speaker. Barack Obama totally gets this.  Obama is naturally approachable, the bloke next door, very self deprecating and hence in many ways endearing.

- Dan is an immensely intelligent man, whose turn of phrase is Shakespearean. But these magnificently crafted words of wisdom are too complex for joe public.  He often makes references to events/historical figures that the common man would simply not understand. As Margaret Thatcher once said. For the message to get through, everybody has to understand it. Dan may prefer giving high convoluted speeches with exquisite turns of phrase but he must consider his message may get lost on the mass.

- Vocal range. Daniel would be even better if he expanded his range, pitch, timing….his voice is naturally monotone and he rarely exudes the passion which sets an audience on fire.  I would love to hear him build the emotion into a cacophony of cheers amongst a jubilant audience.

Again, let me stress Dan is a great speaker. These are suggestions about how he can improve. He has a bright future ahead of him and I for one look forward to cheering him on from this blog.
